About church of promise
As a group of Christians, it is our desire to actively spread the Christian gospel in the Newark area through worship, proclamation and charitable works.
We are a community of people who love God and seek to live our lives ...
- Pursuing God's promises
- Proclaiming God's passion
- Preparing God's people
... to see his kingdom come in Newark.
With God, we are building a church of evangelical Protestant belief, as close as possible to the New Testament model, in which the Bible will be the sole authority in matters of belief and practice.
We invite you to join us if you have a passion for God or want to discover what it means to be part of a community of New Testament Christians. Please contact us or come to our meeting on Sunday where you will find a warm welcome!
- Christian believers of all ages and backgrounds can meet for worship, teaching, encouragement, equipping, friendship and discipleship.
- All people can hear the gospel message, and see a living demonstration of its power to change lives.
- The presence of God can be experienced by all.
- Individuals have freedom, under the leaders' authority, to exercise their personal gifts, natural and spiritual, for the benefit of all.
- The Holy Spirit has freedom to do what he wants.
- Everyone plays an active role as part of the wider Christian church in Newark and the surrounding area.
It is our deepest desire
to foster an environment where:
These values are the basis of everything we do and come from the teaching in the Holy Bible.
Of course we are not perfect and don't get it right every time. With the help of the Holy Spirit, we seek to live our lives by these principles. However, our journey is not based on rules and regulations, but a living relationship with and love for God.
- The pursuit of holiness
- Servanthood and generosity
- Integrity and transparency
- Friendship and good relationships
- Lack of structure and informality
- A welcoming and inclusive ethos
- Team work
- An attitude of grace not legalism
- Mutual encouragement
- Excellence in pastoral care

A Promise for Newark
One of the promises that God has given us is based on the prophecy found in the book of Jeremiah, Chapter 33 v 2-11
"This is what the LORD says, he who made the earth, the LORD who formed it and established it—the LORD is his name: 'Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know.' For this is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says about the houses in this city and the royal palaces of Judah that have been torn down to be used against the siege ramps and the sword in the fight with the Babylonians: 'They will be filled with the dead bodies of the men I will slay in my anger and wrath. I will hide my face from this city because of all its wickedness.
" 'Nevertheless, I will bring health and healing to it; I will heal my people and will let them enjoy abundant peace and security. I will bring Judah and Israel back from captivity and will rebuild them as they were before. I will cleanse them from all the sin they have committed against me and will forgive all their sins of rebellion against me. Then this city will bring me renown, joy, praise and honor before all nations on earth that hear of all the good things I do for it; and they will be in awe and will tremble at the abundant prosperity and peace I provide for it.'
"This is what the LORD says: 'You say about this place, "It is a desolate waste, without men or animals." Yet in the towns of Judah and the streets of Jerusalem that are deserted, inhabited by neither men nor animals, there will be heard once more the sounds of joy and gladness, the voices of bride and bridegroom, and the voices of those who bring thank offerings to the house of the LORD, saying,
"Give thanks to the LORD Almighty,
for the LORD is good;
his love endures forever."
For I will restore the fortunes of the land as they were before,' says the LORD.
We long to see God bring this promise into reality for the people of Newark and the surrounding area.
Church of Promise met for the first time on Easter Sunday in 2007(see photo on left). We didn't expect so many people to come together on that day but reflecting on this now, we can see that God was confirming to us that he wanted this new church to be born. It was setup by a group of Christians who wanted to meet as a close family of people who love God and want to build a church on the basis of the New Testament churches.
As the months passed we have seen a few changes as God moved some of our church family on to new things and others joined us. Our activities have now settled down to a regular service on Sunday with children's activities in The ARK, mid week meetings for prayer and the youth, as well as the weekly outreach youth club focusing on the Winthorpe Road / Yorke Drive community.
It is now 1 year since we first met. We can see God's blessing on us as we have become closer as a church family, living alongside each other and working together to see, as we often pray "God building His church". Yes we are part of the global Christian church which numbers more believers alive today than have lived since Jesus' life on Earth.
We celebrated our 1st anniversary at Easter 2008 with a communion service and a recommitment to God's work through the Church of Promise. After the service we shared a meal together and a big cake! (see photos on right and below)
As a church based on the Promises of God, we love to see God's promises coming true and touching the lives of our friends and acquaintances in Newark, Coddington and the surrounding area.
We also believe God asks us to live our lives closely with Him so He can use us as channels to reach others.
The 7 Year Update
After 7 years of moving around we are delighted and give God all the praise for leading us to combine our church family with the church family who have worshipped at Winthorpe Road Baptist Church for many years.
The two congregations started to meet together on Sundays over the summer of 2013 and on 15th September we met together again as one new church family having agreed to combine at special church meetings held over the summer.
We will continue to be strongly involved in supporting the Newark community through Street Pastors in Newark and Southwell, the Newark Foodbank and reachout to the Mind Body and Spirit community. We look forward to what God will lead us to do next as a new larger church family.
If you have a passion for God or want to discover what it means to live close to Him, please contact us or come to our meeting on Sunday where you will find a warm welcome.
